Environmental protection is a cornerstone of our project.
part of our corporate DNA. A focus on maximizing potential environmental
benefits and minimizing potentially harmful byproducts has been a key factor
guiding the design of the project. This is both an operational necessity of the chemistry inherent in our fuel synthesis processes, and also a major root of sustainable competitive advantage.
There are three primary areas where we can deliver improvements in environmental
Upstream: Eliminating landfills, and recovering wasted
energy and raw materials.
Before our energy inputs reach the plant, the raw
garbage coming from a city or town must first be processed through a
material recovery facility supply chain where we sort and recycle
municipal garbage while capturing the feedstock for the plant. Recyclable
and compostable materials are separated and recovered. The remaining material
that has an energy content is processed into Refuse Derived Feedstock for use
by the ICF plant. This is material that would otherwise be landfilled. Through all of these steps, we come about as close as humanly
possible to achieving a zero waste to landfill diversion goal, with around 90%+
of all garbage being either recycled or recovered for energy use.
At the Plant: Capture and elimination of potentially harmful
Our process is using cleanest processes commercially available for the
production of fuel. Collectively, the ICF project represents the maximum avaialble control technology for the safe elimination of waste. Through a process called gasification, we disassemble the
solid waste inputs at the molecular level into it's gaseous raw elements (primarily hydrogen
and carbon). The plant recycles any tars or other compounds produced during
this initial conversion step back into the process where they are again disasembled at extremely high temperatures, and are completely
eliminated. Hard carbon that is not converted to gas in this step, which in
most waste to energy processes would emerge as fly ash, is fused into a
non-leechable glass-like aggregate that is environmentally safe. The resulting
gas that contiains the elements from the raw garbage goes through an additional extremely thorough cleanup process where it is
further purified, capturing excess CO2, sulfur, and heavy metals, preventing
them from reaching the environment or the downstream fuel synthesis steps. The
only elements that go into the fuel synthesis process are pure hydrogen and
carbon, that have been cleaned down to the parts-per-billion level.
Downstream: Better fuels for a better future.
Clean inputs produce clean outputs. Being synthesized from pure hydrogen and
carbon, the fuel we produce is free of impurities such as sulfur and
aromatics, and delivers significant reductions in conventional tailpipe
The combination of large quantities of biomass in our feedstock inputs, and carbon capture and sequestration in our fuel synthesis processes, ultimately delivers a complete elimination of our lifecycle carbon footprint, enabling us to achieve better environmental performance than even electric vehicles.
The ICF project will have a climate impact similar to removing 1,000,000 cars from the road, and represents one of the largest single carbon reduction opportunities in the world.
